Climate Bulletin for Sri Lanka (Week of 20-27th August 2021)
Highlights
- Rainfall Prediction : Fairly heavy rainfall is predicted in Western, Sabaragamuwa & Central provinces during 18th – 24th August
- Monitored Rainfalls : Very heavy rains were experienced in the Central province with max of 152.9 mm in Kandy district on 12th August
- Monitored Wind : From 10th – 16th August: up to 10-15 km/h Westerly & Southwesterly winds were experienced over the island
- Monitored Sea Surface : Sea surface temperature was observed above 0.5°C around all of Sri Lanka
Interpretation
Monitoring
Rainfall : During the last two weeks, there had been very heavy rainfall over the following province: Central.
Wind : Westerly to Southwesterly winds prevailed in the sea area and around the island during last week.
Temperatures : The temperature anomalies were normal for the whole country the last week – driven by the warm SST’s.
Prediction
Rainfall : During the next week (20th – 27th August) fairly heavy rainfall is predicted for Sabaragamuwa, Western and Central provinces.
Temperatures : The temperature remains slightly normal for August. During 20th – 27th August, the temperature remains high especially in the Eastern and Uva provinces.
Teleconnections : La Nina -The SST forecast indicates that the La Niña event has transitioned to ENSO-neutral and will likely remain so through the boreal summer.
MJO shall be active thus, slightly enhanced rainfall during 17th – 31st August.
