Climate Bulletin for Sri Lanka (Week of 30 January – 06 February 2026)
Highlights
Rainfall Prediction: From 27th Jan – 2nd Feb 2026, moderate rainfall (25-45 mm) is predicted for the Eastern Plains; light to moderate (0-15 mm) is predicted for the Southern Plains, Western Plains and Hills, Eastern Hills and Northern plains. From 3rd – 9th Feb , the rainfall shall increase in Western and Eastern Plains and decrease across the rest of SL.
Monitored Rainfall: During 21st – 27th January, the average rainfall was 1 mm. Highest rainfall was in Mannar on 24th Jan, recorded as 28 mm. During this week, there was low rainfall comparatively across SL. Lowest rainfall was in Western and Southern Plains with average rainfall of 0 mm.
Monitored and Predicted Wind: From 19th – 25th Jan 2026, winds at 1.5 km height were mostly from the northeast at speeds ranging 3-5 m/s. From 28th Jan – 3rd Feb 2026, wind speeds are predicted to be in the range of 3-6 m/s coming from the northeast. Wind speeds are expected to be slightly higher compared to the previous week.
Monitored Sea and Land Temperature: Seasonable temperature was recorded across SL. The Southern plains had the maximum temp of 32.2°C, while the Eastern Hills had the minimum temperature of 24.9°C. The sea surface temperature around Sri Lanka was below average, ranging between (-1°C) – (-0.25°C).
