Climate Bulletin for Sri Lanka (Week of 12 – 19 December 2025)
Highlights
Rainfall Prediction: From 9th -15th Dec, heavy rainfall (105-135 mm) is predicted for the Western Hills, Northern Plains, Eastern Hills and Plains; while fairly heavy rainfall (45-105 mm) is predicted for the Southern plains and Western plains. From 16th – 22nd Dec, rainfall is expected to increase, with higher rainfall likely across the entire country.
Monitored Rainfall:During 02nd – 08th Dec, the average rainfall across Sri Lanka totalled 41 mm. There was lower rainfall during 02nd – 08th Dec compared to the previous week, with an overall decline in rainfall activity across the country. There was much higher rainfall across the Northern plains, with the highest rainfall of 58 mm recorded in Vavuniya on 03rd Dec.
Monitored and Predicted Wind: From 01st -07th Dec, winds at 1.5 km height were mostly from the east at speeds ranging 3-5 m/s. From 10th-16th Dec, wind speeds are predicted to be in the range of 3-10 m/s coming from the North East.
Monitored Sea and Land Temperature: Sri Lanka recorded seasonable temp across its regions. The Southern plains were the warmest, with maximum temp of 32.1°C. The sea surface temperature was near the average around Sri Lanka around Sri Lanka.

Interpretation
Monitoring: Average Rainfall in the regions for the previous week of (03-09 December) = 5.9 mm/day. Maximum Daily Rainfall: 58.5 mm & Minimum Daily Rainfall: 0.0 mm.
Rainfall: Easterly winds prevailed over the sea area and around the island last week, with wind speeds ranging between 3-5 m/s from 01 – 07 Dec.
Wind : During the period 30 Nov – 06 Dec, Sri Lanka experienced near-neutral conditions.
Prediction
Rainfall: From 9 – 15 December, rainfall is expected to be 105–135 mm/week in NP, WH, EH and EP regions; 45-105 mm/week in WP and SP regions.
Temperatures:From 11 – 24 December, temperature will remain normal for Sri Lanka. (Source: SL Met Dept).
Teleconnections:The Madden-Julian-Oscillation (MJO) will slightly suppress the rainfall from 08th – 12th Dec,moderately suppress the rainfall from 13th – 17th Dec and significantly suppress the rainfall from 18th – 22nd Dec.
Seasonal Rainfall Prediction:The forecast for the December-January-February 2026 season shows high tendency towards the near-neutral tercile.
